Governor Greg Abbott has informed the Texas Legislature of updates to the agenda for Special Session #2. The revisions focus on measures aimed at protecting law enforcement and addressing election procedures in the state.
The first updated item calls for legislation designed to shield law enforcement officers from having unsubstantiated complaints and other information in agency files made public. The second agenda item seeks legislative action related to election processes, specifically concerning how voters with outdated residence addresses are accepted and how quickly a voter’s registration takes effect after a registrar receives certain change of address notifications.
“Legislation that protects law enforcement officers from public disclosure of unsubstantiated complaints and other information maintained in law enforcement agency files,” Governor Abbott stated in his message to lawmakers.
He also specified, “Legislation relating to election procedures regarding accepting a voter with a residence address that is not current and the immediate effect of a voter’s registration after the registrar’s receipt of certain change of address notices.”
These agenda updates follow previous efforts by state leaders to address both public safety concerns and issues related to election integrity.
