Governor Greg Abbott has called on the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD) to end its association with the 2026 Houston Islamic Games, which is sponsored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR NJ). The event is scheduled to take place at Bridgeland High School, a public school facility.
In a letter sent to CFISD, Governor Abbott stated: “It has come to my attention that Bridgeland High School intends to offer public school facilities to host the 2026 Houston Islamic Games. Be aware I recently designated ‘the Muslim Brotherhood and its successor organization CAIR’ as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations under state law. You cannot invite such dangers through the front doors of our schools. Texans deserve immediate action to curb the spread of Islamic extremism, and public facilities funded by their tax dollars will not be utilized to host terrorist related groups.”
The Governor directed CFISD to immediately preserve all records and communications related to this event and required confirmation within seven days that any negotiations or agreements for hosting it are terminated. If CFISD does not comply, Abbott said he would instruct the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to seize relevant communications from district employees about CAIR, any efforts to hide CAIR’s involvement, and any agreements or financial documents linked with the proposed event. Findings would then be referred by TEA to the Texas Attorney General for possible legal action.
Governor Abbott also outlined additional steps taken against CAIR and related organizations: “Requesting that U.S. Secretary Bessent suspend CAIR’s tax-exempt status; Directing DPS to launch criminal investigations into the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR; Designating the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations; Ordering investigations into Sharia Courts.”
As part of his responsibilities as head of Texas’s executive office, Governor Abbott oversees initiatives focused on education enhancement, economic development, border security efforts, and community programs in Texas. More information about his office can be found at https://gov.texas.gov/.
