Amanda Crawford has been appointed as the new Texas insurance commissioner, beginning her term on February 3. In this position, she will serve as the chief executive of the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), which oversees the regulation of the state’s $293.9 billion insurance market. Texas has the second largest insurance market in the United States and ranks fifth globally.
The TDI is responsible for regulating 3,447 companies and more than 983,411 agents and adjusters across Texas.
“I’m honored to serve as the next commissioner of insurance,” said Crawford. “TDI has a strong foundation, and I look forward to building on that work while strengthening our insurance markets and keeping Texas consumers at the center of every decision.”
Crawford brings over 24 years of public service experience. She began her career at the Office of the Attorney General, where she held several roles including general counsel and deputy attorney general for administration. Before taking up her new post, she was executive director of the Texas Department of Information Resources and served as chief information officer for Texas.
She holds a degree from The University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center.
Governor Greg Abbott appointed Crawford following Cassie Brown’s retirement on February 2. Brown served four years as insurance commissioner after more than two decades in public service.
