Austin businesses are preparing for a busy fall event season, with major gatherings such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL Fest), Formula 1, the Texas Book Festival, and Texas Longhorns football expected to draw large crowds. These events not only attract visitors but also provide significant economic benefits to the city.

According to data from October 2024, Austin collected over $28 million in sales tax revenue during that month. ACL Fest was a key contributor, generating a record $538.8 million in economic activity for the area last year.

Local businesses are encouraged to plan ahead to maximize opportunities presented by these events. “Successful marketing programs begin with clear, measurable goals — and event-related activations are no exception,” states the release. Businesses near popular venues may aim to increase foot traffic by up to 20% during event periods, but this requires early planning such as hiring additional staff and securing necessary permits months in advance.

Happy Chicks Chicken Kitchen, an Austin-based fried chicken restaurant with four locations, has experienced notable growth by aligning its operations with the city’s event calendar. The restaurant starts food preparation and planning three months before major events and hires extra staff one month prior.

Marketing through multiple channels is another recommended strategy. Physical signage along key routes like South Lamar and Barton Springs Road can reach attendees heading to ACL Fest or F1 shuttle stops. Audio platforms such as radio and podcasts have proven effective; a 2024 report indicated that 84% of podcast listeners take action after hearing about a brand, with 44% making purchases.

Blending in-person activities with online engagement is also advised. For example, businesses participating in festivals can encourage customers to share their experiences on social media, increasing visibility and fostering community engagement.

Happy Chicks has used various methods to connect with customers since opening in 2017, including festival participation, business community events, social media outreach, and billboard advertising on 183 North.

The benefits of event participation extend beyond immediate revenue gains. “Increased revenue isn’t the only reason to associate a brand with an event. Passionate event attendees may also become dedicated customers.” Happy Chicks has hosted watch parties for local sports teams and supported schools through academic awards and fundraising initiatives.

Austin’s active event schedule offers ongoing opportunities for local businesses willing to engage both visitors and residents throughout the year.
