Austin Energy has announced the addition of 18.8 megawatts (MW) of new local solar power to its grid in 2025, marking a record year for the utility’s renewable energy efforts. The increase comes from 749 new solar projects across Austin, including 690 residential and 59 commercial installations.
This expansion brings Austin Energy’s total local solar capacity to 188 MW, leaving just 17 MW needed to reach its target of 205 MW by 2027.
“Local solar is a cornerstone of Austin’s clean energy future,” said Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy General Manager. “Every system installed in Austin helps electric bills stay affordable and makes our city’s power generation portfolio even cleaner.”
According to the utility, generating electricity close to where it is used improves reliability, reduces transmission costs, and keeps more energy spending within the local economy. Rooftop solar systems also reduce demand on the broader ERCOT grid and can help stabilize market prices during times of high usage across Texas.
The growth in solar this year included projects at homes, schools, nonprofits, and businesses throughout the city. Recent initiatives such as Shared Solar and the Solar Standard Offer have expanded access to local solar generation for more residents and organizations.
