Austin Energy has announced the completion of its first commercial project under the Solar Standard Offer program, less than a year after launching the initiative aimed at increasing clean energy in the city.

The project involved Radial Power, which owns the solar system, and Axis Solar as the contractor. Together, they installed 812 solar panels on a warehouse rooftop. The installation is expected to generate close to 660,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. This effort demonstrates how businesses in Austin can use their available rooftop space and local sunlight to contribute more solar power to the electric grid.

Richard Genece, Vice President for Customer Energy Solutions at Austin Energy, stated: “The Solar Standard Offer is a game-changer. This first-of-its-kind approach empowers property owners, solar developers and the Austin community to work together toward a carbon-free future. It’s a major opportunity to meet our climate goals and create long-term value for everyone involved.”

The Solar Standard Offer program gives commercial property owners two options: they can either install their own solar panels or lease their rooftops to third-party developers who handle installation and operation. All energy generated is sold back to Austin Energy, which adds it directly into the city’s renewable supply. Some of this energy also supports low-income households through the Community Solar Program.

For businesses that choose leasing arrangements, there are no initial costs required from property owners. This allows them to earn passive income while supporting sustainability efforts within Austin.

Austin Energy pays system owners for the electricity produced by their installations. The utility reviews these payment rates every three years in order to keep compensation fair and maintain affordable investment opportunities for all participants.

Additional information about participation as a contractor, owner or host can be found on Austin Energy’s website.
