The U.S. Census Bureau will begin an embargo for the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates on September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargoed data will be publicly released on September 11.

The ACS collects and provides statistics about people and housing in the United States. It covers topics such as language spoken at home, education, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage status and rent, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. For many of these subjects—over forty in total—the ACS is the only source of local-level estimates.

Subscribers to the embargo will have early access to these one-year statistics starting September 9 at 10 a.m. ET until September 11 at 12:01 a.m. ET. The embargoed information will cover all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional districts, metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic regions with populations of at least 65,000.

Wire services and distribution outlets are not allowed to share news stories or data files from the embargo before the official public release date and time. More details can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy. After the embargo lifts on September 11 at 10 a.m., all data products—including those on data.census.gov, through APIs, summary files, and other tools—will become available to everyone.

Those interested in accessing embargoed information can register online through the Census Bureau’s newsroom site: https://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
