Approximately 56 employees at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). This development follows a campaign focused on improving compensation, career advancement opportunities, and gaining a stronger voice in workplace decisions.
Adante Balke, IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative, commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”
The new bargaining unit will begin negotiations for its first contract. The group aims to address issues such as pay rates, benefits packages, career growth opportunities, and protections against retaliation when raising workplace concerns. According to the union, collective bargaining will give workers more influence over matters that affect their jobs.
During the organizing effort, some workers expressed concerns about management’s response. They cited alleged anti-union tactics and the dismissal of an employee who supported unionization.
Discovery World staff play an essential role in running exhibits and educational programs that serve families and students visiting the museum.
IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli stated: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”
The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across North America in sectors including aerospace, defense, airlines, shipbuilding, transit systems, healthcare services, automotive manufacturing and more within both the United States and Canada.
