Dr. Sarwar Pedawi, in an interview with Austin Business Daily, outlined how compliance, infrastructure investment, and technology can influence sustainable development in the Middle East. His perspective offers a framework for growth centered on ethics, innovation, and education.

According to Pedawi, when asked about NorthLight’s adherence to Western compliance standards in regions where informal value transfer is prevalent, he said, “We work through regulated banks and licensed intermediaries.” He further explained that the company has “implemented robust internal controls,” conducts “regular third-party audits with international accounting firms,” and complies with “various sanctions – such as OFAC.” Building a “culture of accountability,” he noted, aids NorthLight in collaborating effectively with international partners and enhances its credibility and market access.

Pedawi also discussed the economic rationale behind NorthLight’s investments in telecommunications and infrastructure. He described connectivity as “today’s basic utility” and emphasized that each addition of fiber or towers facilitates telemedicine, remote education, e-government services, and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) market access. These initiatives reduce transaction costs, increase household productivity, and create high-value technical jobs for youth—key factors against instability. Drawing parallels to developed economies like Europe and the U.S., he remarked that infrastructure development precedes growth.

When addressing how NorthLight demonstrates its responsibility under standards set by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), European Union (EU), and United States (U.S.), Pedawi highlighted three aspects: independent financial audits of operating entities; periodic sanctions and Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) screening across counterparties; and published Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) commitments. These measures are designed to be measurable, externally reviewable, and aligned with expectations from European and U.S. partners.

Discussing artificial intelligence’s potential impact on the Kurdistan Region’s economy, Pedawi expressed optimism about AI’s ability to drive economic development akin to the industrial revolution’s effect on 19th-century Europe. He sees AI as a tool to bridge development gaps by providing online learning opportunities despite teacher shortages. AI could foster an inclusive society by creating high-value jobs for educated individuals. However, he cautioned that success relies on smart and inclusive implementation.

Dr. Sarwar Pedawi is a Kurdistan-born entrepreneur who founded NorthLight Holding. With multiple academic degrees including a PhD in Business Administration, his leadership focuses on ethical enterprise practices, talent development, and promoting inclusive economic growth throughout the Middle East.
