Elon Musk’s companies have accumulated more than 500 properties across Texas, totaling about 6,000 acres, according to an analysis by the Houston Chronicle. The holdings are spread throughout the state and include facilities for Tesla, SpaceX, the Boring Company, and several other Musk-affiliated entities. Many of these properties are registered under names such as “Colorado River Project” or “Dogleg Park.”
The largest property is Giga Texas, Tesla’s factory complex near Austin. This site covers 2,500 acres and contains over 10 million square feet of production space. The facility manufactures Model Y vehicles and the Cybertruck. A tunnel built by the Boring Company runs beneath Texas State Highway 130 to connect production areas.
About 20 miles east in Bastrop, the Boring Company has developed more than 350 acres for testing equipment and housing employees in a temporary village called Snailbrook. Across from this site, SpaceX operates a Starlink factory producing approximately 70,000 satellite kits per week. Plans are underway to double its size. Earlier this year, Texas Governor Greg Abbott approved a $17.3 million grant related to a $280 million expansion at SpaceX.
In southern Texas near Brownsville, SpaceX has established “Starbase,” which includes residential areas for nearly 500 people and workspaces for thousands of employees. Starbase is home to Starship rockets and over one million square feet of manufacturing space. Expansion plans include additional launchpads as well as new housing and retail options.
Tesla’s presence in Texas extends further with projects such as a lithium refinery in Robstown near Corpus Christi that will provide battery materials for up to one million electric vehicles annually. Near Dallas in Royse City, Tesla Energy is constructing a large battery storage plant expected to be among the biggest in ERCOT’s network.
Leased sites also support operations around Texas. In McGregor southwest of Waco, SpaceX tests rockets on leased land. West of Houston in Brookshire, Tesla intends to lease over one million square feet for battery manufacturing.
Goran Calic, a professor at McMaster University who studies Musk’s management style said: “Elon Musk has more control in Texas than he does anywhere else.”
