Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.7 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 28 organizations serving the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region. The funding, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), will help provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties.
“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” said Governor Abbott. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation.”
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served.”
Chairwoman Koerner presented the grants at Meals on Wheels San Antonio. Organizations receiving funding include local councils of governments, mental health centers, county offices, food banks, housing support groups, and other nonprofits providing transportation, financial assistance, counseling, peer support services, legal aid through Veterans Treatment Courts, skill-based training, homeless veteran support, family services, and home modification.
Among the recipients are Alamo Area Council of Governments with $600,000 for transportation and housing programs; Bexar County Commissioners Court with over $1 million across several initiatives; Family Endeavors receiving nearly $1 million for financial assistance and counseling; Meals on Wheels San Antonio with $500,000 split between support services and housing programs; as well as other groups supporting needs from emergency funds to mental health care.
In May 2025 Governor Abbott announced a record-breaking $46.3 million distributed via more than 200 grants statewide—an effort projected to serve nearly 40,000 veterans or their dependents this year alone.
Since its inception in 2009 through the current grant cycle ending in 2026, FVA has awarded more than $359 million through over 1,600 grants statewide.
The TVC distributes these funds across five categories: General Assistance; Housing for Texas Heroes; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; and Veteran County Service Officers. These grants fund a variety of services such as emergency financial help, transportation options for medical appointments or job interviews, legal aid via treatment courts focused on veterans’ issues rather than incarceration or fines when possible—plus home modifications or rental/mortgage assistance where needed.
Funding comes primarily from special games offered by the Texas Lottery designated specifically for veteran support efforts. Additional donations can be made during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
