Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Richard B. “Rick” McCaslin, Ph.D., as the Texas State Historian for a term ending on December 17, 2027. The role of the State Historian includes promoting public awareness of Texas history, supporting the teaching of state history in schools, consulting with state officials to encourage historical understanding, and giving presentations on topics related to Texas history.

McCaslin is currently Director of Publications at the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) and previously served as Professor of Texas History at the University of North Texas. He is recognized as a Fellow of TSHA and has authored or edited twenty-one books, eight of which have received awards. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree from Delta State University, a Master’s from Louisiana State University, and a Doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.

The Office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott forms part of the executive branch in state government and operates primarily out of Austin at the State Insurance Building. The office has contributed to job growth in Texas and led several initiatives focused on economic opportunities, education enhancement, individual liberties protection, parental empowerment in schooling, and border security efforts such as Operation Lone Star. Since his election in 2014, Governor Abbott’s administration has also collaborated with businesses like Southwest Airlines for economic expansion projects across the state.
