Texas Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to begin criminal investigations into the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

“The goal is to identify, disrupt, and eradicate terrorist organizations engaged in criminal activities in Texas,” said Governor Abbott. “We will target threats of violence, intimidation, and harassment of our citizens. We will also focus on individuals or groups who unlawfully impose Sharia law—which violates the Texas Constitution and state statutes.”

According to Abbott’s directive, DPS Special Agents working with FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces across Texas will collect intelligence and start investigations into possible breaches of state and federal laws. The DPS will collaborate with local and federal law enforcement agencies to prevent any group from engaging in criminal acts or promoting extremist Islamic radicalism that goes against Texas law.

Governor Abbott has previously taken steps such as designating both the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations and calling for inquiries into Sharia courts.
