Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to investigate possible Medicaid fraud in Texas. The move aims to protect taxpayer funds, ensure access for eligible residents, and maintain effective healthcare services.

In a letter, Governor Abbott stated: “Texas provides critical healthcare services to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with disabilities through the state’s Medicaid program. Access to medical services is a key component in supporting these individuals and Medicaid fraud robs taxpayers and impairs their ability to receive necessary healthcare. During my tenure as Governor, Texas has policed the Medicaid program and proactively combatted fraud, but we will strengthen our efforts to further protect taxpayers, preserve access for eligible Texans, and maintain the integrity of Texas’ Medicaid Program.”

The Governor directed HHSC to enhance anti-fraud efforts by launching investigations into potential misuse of state funds. These steps are intended to secure taxpayer resources while maintaining access for those who qualify for Medicaid.

Additionally, Governor Abbott outlined actions including directing investigations into potential child care funding fraud and volunteering Texas for a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development pilot program aimed at reducing fraud in federal affordable housing programs.

Governor Abbott leads the executive office for the state government of Texas. His administration focuses on economic development, education enhancement, border security initiatives such as Operation Lone Star, community programs like child sex trafficking prevention efforts, job creation, individual liberties protection, parental empowerment in schooling decisions, and statewide service delivery through offices based primarily in Austin at the State Insurance Building (https://gov.texas.gov/). Under his leadership since 2014 following his election as governor (https://gov.texas.gov/), Texas has seen significant job growth and recognition on national platforms such as being listed among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2024 (https://gov.texas.gov/).

Reports of suspected fraud or abuse within Texas’ Medicaid program can be submitted through official channels.
