Houston physician Shikha Bharaktiya, MD, of Endocrinology Clinics of Texas, will host her first Walk with a Doc Texas event on Saturday, November 15 at 9 am. The walk will take place at Memorial Park in Houston and is open to residents of all ages. In the event of bad weather, the location will move to the Galleria mall.

Dr. Bharaktiya and staff from Endocrinology Clinics of Texas will be present to support participants and answer health-related questions during the walk. “Walking is one of the simplest, best things people can do to live a long, high-quality life. Walk with a Doc makes it easy by providing the time, place, motivation (a brief health information talk), and fellow participants for a fun walking experience,” according to organizers.

The Walk with a Doc program involves physicians organizing walks in their communities and inviting patients and community members to join them. The initiative aims to promote physical activity through group walks led by healthcare professionals.

Walk with a Doc Texas operates under the guidance of a national nonprofit organization that encourages healthy lifestyles through movement and conversation in physician-led groups. The program is supported in Texas by the Texas Medical Association (TMA), which represents more than 59,000 physicians and medical students across the state. TMA’s mission since its founding in 1853 has been to improve public health in Texas.

Participation in this event is free and does not require preregistration. Information about future events will be posted on this chapter’s Walk with a Doc website.

Funding for Walk with a Doc Texas in 2025 comes from TMA Foundation, TMA Insurance Trust, as well as contributions from other organizations, physicians, and their families.

Walk with a Doc was established in 2005 by David Sabgir, MD, a cardiologist based in Columbus, Ohio. More details about the organization are available on its website.
