The Young Workers Committee of IAM Union Local 2198, in partnership with the Community Service Committee, organized a winter blanket drive in Houston to support people experiencing homelessness. The initiative resulted in the collection and distribution of 30 bags containing blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets for the upcoming winter season. All items were donated by members of IAM Local 2198.
Participants from the Young Workers Committee included Chairperson Quintarius Oliver and committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. From the Community Service Committee, Chairperson Albert Harmason joined Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges in supporting the event.
The Young Workers Committee has also recently hosted its inaugural Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser. The event brought together union members, families, and community supporters. Proceeds went to Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to help provide services at no cost to recipients.
Additionally, the committee collaborated with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School by donating over 50 backpacks filled with supplies to students before the school year began.
IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen said: “This is a powerful example of union values in action. Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”
IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez highlighted young members’ contributions: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members. From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”
Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director, added: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities. The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”
Through these efforts, IAM Local 2198’s younger members continue their outreach activities while promoting core values within their organization.
