Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 811 Women’s Committee in Houston recently met to promote breast cancer awareness and encourage early detection efforts. The group discussed the value of annual mammograms, self-examinations, and highlighted their upcoming participation in the MD Anderson “Give Cancer the Boot” Walk scheduled for Saturday, November 15.
During a monthly meeting, committee members reported to fellow union members that breast cancer can also impact men. They stressed the importance of self-checks and monitoring any changes in one’s body.
Committee participants included Margie King, Iveritt Evelita, Jiemel Sanders, Sarah Monderoy Garcia, and IAM Local 811 Vice President Nelson Yanes. Their work contributed to the success of the awareness initiative.
“The Women’s Committee at Local 811 is a shining example of how IAM members lead with compassion and action,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes. “Their dedication to health awareness and community service truly reflects what being a Machinist is all about.”
IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen added: “The Women’s Committee at Local 811 is making a real difference, showing that our strength as Machinists goes far beyond the job site. When our members come together to raise awareness and support cancer research, they’re not just helping their community, they’re helping save lives. I’m proud of their leadership and commitment to caring for others.”
“Our union family stands together not only in the workplace, but in our communities,” said IAM Local 811 Women’s Committee Chair Sarah Monderoy Garcia. “Efforts like this show the heart of our membership, raising awareness, saving lives, and supporting one another every step of the way.”
Members and their families were invited to participate in the “Give Cancer the Boot” Walk either with the committee or virtually from their own neighborhoods or local parks. The event was free and open to everyone.
