The IAM New Mexico State Council convened in Ruidoso, New Mexico, bringing together union members from across the state to focus on organizing, political engagement, and improved communication among local unions. The meeting aimed to strengthen the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ (IAM) presence in workplaces and communities throughout New Mexico.

Council President John Dyrcz of Local 794 opened the event, emphasizing unity and the importance of collaboration within the labor movement. “Our state council meeting went great,” said Dyrcz. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”

Dora Cervantes, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer, delivered a “State of Our Union” address. She discussed the union’s growth, recent contract achievements, and national campaigns that support workers’ rights. Cervantes encouraged delegates to build on the IAM’s history of advocacy.

Robert “Bobby” Martinez, IAM Western Territory General Vice President, addressed issues facing federal employees and contract workers. He highlighted the union’s efforts to defend fair pay, benefits, and workplace protections.

The event included updates from other IAM leaders. Richie Johnsen, Air Transport Territory General Vice President, spoke about ongoing negotiations with airline carriers and emphasized the benefits of successful campaigns across the union. Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM International President for the Rail Division, recognized Local 331’s first participation at the council meeting and reported on current challenges in the rail industry.

Other speakers included Loren Almeroth, Assistant Legislative and Political Director, and DeLane Adams, Assistant Communications Director.

Throughout the weekend, delegates discussed strategies for organizing, leadership development, and political advocacy. They also worked on building alliances with labor-friendly elected officials and updated bylaws to prepare for upcoming elections.

NMSC officers elected at the meeting are: President John Dyrcz (Local 794), First Vice President Art Pardo (Local 2515), Second Vice President Virgil Thompson (Local 794), Secretary Treasurer Tina Davis (Local 794), Trustee Lynnelle Jimenez (Local 1635), Trustee Bud Duryea (Local 2515), and Trustee Ron More (Local 2515).

Delegates concluded the gathering with a commitment to increase union strength across New Mexico through solidarity and coordinated action.
