The Texas State Council of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) recently held a meeting in Austin, gathering nearly 100 delegates and guests from across Texas. The focus of the meeting was on advancing policies and supporting candidates who represent the interests of working families in the state.

Council President Taylor Rehmet began the event by emphasizing unity and strategic action among members. “When we show up united, we win,” said Rehmet.

During the meeting, the council announced its endorsement of Taylor Rehmet, who also serves as IAM Local 776B President, for Texas State Senate District 9. Rehmet’s background includes service as a U.S. Air Force veteran, experience as a community organizer, and work as a machinist. He has been recognized for his commitment to solidarity and economic justice.

“IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin stated, “Taylor understands the everyday struggles of working people because he’s lived them. He’s a fighter who leads with integrity, and he never forgets where he comes from. Texas workers deserve a champion like Taylor in the state Senate.”

Delegates at the event heard from leaders within Texas labor organizations, such as Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy, Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Aguilar, and Smith County Central Labor Council President Claretta Allen. They spoke about strengthening democracy and ensuring that economic opportunities benefit all Texans.

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett addressed attendees via video message, acknowledging IAM members’ efforts to protect workers’ rights and their advocacy on key legislative issues.

Other speakers included IAM Assistant Organizing Director Juan Eldridge and Assistant Political and Legislative Director Loren Almeroth, who highlighted recent organizing successes that demonstrate IAM’s influence in advocating for workers’ interests.

Martin noted the commitment shown by those present: “Every delegate in that room came ready to build power and not just for IAM members, but for every worker in Texas.”

The meeting also featured remarks from several other officials and representatives:
– Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines President Tony Blevins
– IAM Southern Territory Special Representatives Shaun Jenkins and Derek Cearley
– IAM District 142 Legislative Director Sean Holland
– Texas Climate Jobs Project Executive Director Bo Delp
– Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D-District 52)

The council continues its role in representing IAM union members throughout Texas at both workplace and community levels.
