The City of Leakey has been officially recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO), according to an announcement from Governor Greg Abbott. This certification follows Leakey’s completion of a multi-step process designed to support economic development and job creation through music-related business in Texas communities.

Governor Abbott stated, “Congratulations to the City of Leakey on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation. With support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounts for more than 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31 billion in annual economic activity statewide. Together, we will continue to work alongside communities in every region of our state to create good-paying jobs and boost economic growth.”

Representative Wes Virdell commented on Leakey’s recognition: “Many things come to mind when I think of Leakey, but two in particular are the Frio River and music that flows along with it. Music enriches Texas culture, and you would be hard pressed to find a more enriching experience than to enjoy small town Texas music. Congratulations to the people of Leakey on earning the distinct honor of being a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community.”

Real County Judge Bella A. Rubio reflected on her experiences growing up in Leakey: “Growing up in Leakey and having the pleasure of listening to local musicians play instruments such as the harmonica, guitar, and banjo on their front porches was the very thing that always brought such joy and peace to my soul. This designation of Leakey as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community just confirms the musical heritage of our community that will empower unification, enrichment, and economic growth. ‘Leakey is Music Strong.’”

Jan Larsen, President of Songs on the Frio, noted the impact for local residents: “Being designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community is a tremendous honor for Leakey. This recognition not only celebrates our deep love for music but also strengthens the economic vitality of our town. We may be small, but we have a big soul. Music is an important part of who we are.”

Carole Petrovics, owner of Rio Bella Resort & Rustic 83, said: “In Leakey, music unites us. Earning the designation as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community opens new opportunities for our town and every guest who visits. We can’t wait to share the magic of music with all.”

A ceremony marking this certification will take place at Bent Rim Grill in Leakey on Saturday, October 11 at 6:00 PM. The event will include city officials, community leaders, musical entertainment, and TMO Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Gini Mascorro presenting the official designation.

Leakey becomes the 90th community in Texas to receive this certification since TMO launched its statewide program in 2016. The TMO operates within the Governor’s Economic Development & Tourism Office and works with more than 80 certified partners across Texas.
