The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) San Angelo District has been recognized for its use of recycled tires in road construction projects. In recent work, the district repurposed 135,389 used tires as materials for pavement treatments, reducing landfill waste and improving the durability of local roads.

TxDOT has emphasized partnerships with industry to integrate recycled and environmentally responsible materials into both construction and maintenance activities across Texas. The agency’s collaborative approach was acknowledged with the Environmental Achievement Award, which highlights efforts to support communities through sustainable practices.

“By repurposing materials typically discarded in a landfill, we’re enhancing the durability and performance of our roads while also safeguarding the environment,” said TxDOT San Angelo District Engineer Chris Cowen.

The department continues to focus on solutions that address current transportation needs while prioritizing environmental protection for future generations.

Nationally, similar initiatives are underway to modernize transportation infrastructure and improve sustainability. For example, over $2.2 billion from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program has been distributed by the Biden-Harris Administration to help urban and rural areas advance projects that make transportation systems safer and more sustainable. This funding is part of a larger $7.5 billion allocation under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support modernization efforts over five years. Other U.S. Department of Transportation programs include new guidance and $7.3 billion in formula funding announced by the Federal Highway Administration to help states prepare for extreme weather events such as wildfires, flooding, and heat waves. These initiatives aim to build resilience into critical infrastructure nationwide.
