The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the deadline for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients affected by the January winter storm to apply for replacement benefits. The announcement was made by Governor Greg Abbott.
“Thanks to our partners in the White House, Texans affected by the recent winter storm have more time to apply for SNAP benefits to replace any food they lost,” said Governor Abbott. “By extending the replacement benefit deadline, Texans are better equipped to feed their families and recover from the effects of the freezing weather. I thank Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Trump administration for their unwavering support of Texas families.”
HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth added, “The winter storm and power outages left many communities in difficult situations. We are thankful that we can offer this support to families who are still recovering from the storms.”
SNAP recipients now have until February 23, 2026, to request replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed during the storm. According to HHSC, once a request is submitted, funds should be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days.
Recipients must visit a local HHSC office to apply for benefit replacement. Information on locating an office is available at YourTexasBenefits.com by clicking “Find an Office” at the bottom of the page.
Texans seeking additional disaster assistance can visit HHSC’s Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage or dial 2-1-1 and select option 1 for local resources such as food or shelter.
