The Texas Municipal League (TML) will relocate its headquarters from Austin to Georgetown, ending a three-decade presence in the state capital. The organization and its affiliated entities plan to invest millions of dollars in renovating the Wesleyan Building at 205 East University Avenue, according to Georgetown Mayor Joshua Schroeder.
The Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool will acquire and redevelop the four-story, 64,000-square-foot building—also known as the Georgetonian—into the new Texas Municipal Center. This move follows a months-long search for new office space throughout the Austin area. TML and the risk pool currently employ about 250 people and have shared offices at 1821 Rutherford Lane in northeast Austin since the 1990s.
Officials cited changes in work habits, with much of their workforce now remote, as a key reason for leaving their current facility. The existing building has excess space and outdated systems. The planned Georgetown site will feature flexible layouts, wellness features, and updated technology.
Board chair Bert Lumbreras said: “The decision to house the center in Georgetown reinforced the league’s commitment to serving member cities for decades to come.”
Renovation plans for the Wesleyan Building include zoning updates and community engagement before construction begins. Completion and move-in are expected by 2029. Originally built in the 1960s by a Methodist Church affiliate as an independent living facility, it later served as general offices under McIntosh Holdings.
No financial incentives are being offered for TML’s relocation. However, discussions are ongoing between city officials and TML about partnering on a new downtown parking garage and event space intended to support both local needs and visiting officials. The proposed structure would be located between Ninth and Tenth streets as part of Georgetown’s planned Ninth Street Art Walk.
TML is a nonprofit advocacy group representing more than 1,100 cities across Texas. Its sister entity, the Intergovernmental Risk Pool, provides insurance and loss prevention services.
Georgetown continues to see significant development activity. Southwestern University is planning a large mixed-use district called Southwestern University 560 near its campus that will include housing, retail spaces, cultural venues, offices, restaurants, a boutique hotel, and more amenities for residents and visitors alike. In addition, Columnar Investments is moving forward with Heirloom in Georgetown—a $100 million mixed-use project on 620 acres that aims to create up to 3,600 residential units along with commercial space designed around walkable retail districts similar to downtown Georgetown.
For three consecutive years, Georgetown has been recognized as the fastest-growing city of its size nationwide.
