In Central Texas, Primarily Primates, Inc. operates a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates that have been used in laboratories, the entertainment industry, or kept as exotic pets. The organization cares for more than 300 animals, providing them with physical rehabilitation and enrichment activities to encourage natural behaviors.

At this year’s SXSW event, UPLIFT Desk representatives met the team from Primarily Primates and learned about their work. During their conversations, the sanctuary staff mentioned a need for new office chairs, noting that most of their resources are directed toward animal care. In response, UPLIFT Desk donated chairs and desks through its donation program to improve the working conditions for sanctuary staff.

The partnership also introduced UPLIFT Desk employees to Baxter, a chimpanzee at the sanctuary whose paintings are sold to support his care. Baxter was born in a research lab and later appeared on television before being rescued by Primarily Primates.

The company emphasized its commitment to supporting local organizations engaged in impactful work. “For us, philanthropy is woven into our company DNA, especially when it supports neighbors doing incredible work right here in Texas. It’s a little ‘bananas’ to think how a walk through SXSW led to a long-term partnership with a primate sanctuary, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world. Sharing stories like these reminds us how powerful business connections can be not only to foster growth but also to give back when there is opportunity,” according to the statement.

Primarily Primates is currently constructing a new enclosure for four recently arrived chimpanzees. The new housing will offer additional space for social introductions and serve as backup housing during maintenance on other enclosures.
